Approve Letter of Agreement with Heinemann Professional Development for a Math Workshop - $10,000 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval of the Letter of Agreement with Heinemann Professional Development for the services of Dr. Arthur Hyde and Lynn Pittner to provide a two-day Math Workshop for the Title 1 Elementary Mathematics Specialists on July 14 and 15, 2008. The Letter of Agreement includes responsibilities of the District and Heinemann Professional Development to ensure a successful workshop. The workshop will be held at Folsom Elementary for 60 participants.

Dr. Arthur Hyde is the author of the book Comprehending Math: Adapting Reading Strategies to Teach Mathematics, K-6. Dr. Hyde and Ms. Pittner will present reading strategies through teaching problem-solving in mathematics. This two-day interactive workshop has been customized for our Hillsborough teachers to include strategies for infusing the mathematics process standards in teaching our new Sunshine State Standards. Dr. Hyde will provide materials and supplies needed for the training. The Math Specialists will be responsible for constructing an Action Plan as evidence of learning and indicating how this training will impact instruction. Action Plans must include both short-term and long-term goals for assisting math teachers to reflect on pedagogy and must specifically include elements from this workshop to be implemented in the 2008/2009 school year. The train-the-trainer model will be used so district teachers can provide this training in the future.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 2 – The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT mathematics will increase a minimum of five percentage points.
