Approve Agreements for Technical Services for Consultants for the Elementary Summer Reading Trainings, 2008 - $76,066 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

We request approval of the attached list of Agreements for Technical Services with elementary teachers who will deliver reading training to K-5 teachers. All teachers are highly trained in the area of reading and have demonstrated outstanding trainer abilities.

This high-quality professional development is designed to enhance teacher understanding of the reading process, the essential elements of reading and the use of best practices in the classroom. These trainings will impact approximately 1,800 classroom teachers. Trainings will be conducted at Nelson, Carrollwood, and Mango Elementary Schools on June 6-20, 2008, and July 14-18, 2008. Each of the 60 K-5 inservice trainings will be focused on scientifically-based reading research and the essential elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

In order to effectively provide the training, permission is requested to add and/or delete trainers as needed, not to exceed the budget of $76,066.

Goal 1 – The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of five percentage points.

Funds of $76,066 are available through the K-12 Comprehensive Reading Plan, Project 4526.

2009 FCAT reading scores for students of participants will be analyzed to determine effectiveness of training.
