SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Procedures for Students' Use of Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices During the School Day

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

At a recent School Board meeting, a request was made to review the procedures for allowing students to use cell phones and other electronic devices during school hours. A committee composed of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and area directors met, shared input, and discussed the current practices. In addition, a School Board workshop was held to discuss student discipline, the use of cell phones and other electronic devices being displayed during school hours. At this workshop principals voiced their concerns about the disruptions and misuse of electronic devices during the school day. The consensus from these meetings is to recommend that students turn their cell phones and other electronic devices off and secure them out of sight from the beginning to the end of the school day.
