Approve Revisions to High School Bell Times for the 2008-2009 School Year REVISED ATTACHMENT - MIDDLETON

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The School Board approved bell times for all schools for the 2008-2009 school year on May 20, 2008. Following that approval, discussions with Yvonne Lyons and Jean Clements of the Hillsborough County Classroom Teachers Association were held to address concerns about the preservation of teacher planning time in the high schools that had a seven hour and twenty seven minute student day. In order to help address this concern, high school principals have been directed to adjust their teacher day in order to ensure a minimum of twenty uninterrupted minutes of planning time after the students are dismissed in the afternoon. Nine high schools were able to adjust their bell times to less than a seven hour and twenty seven minute day which helps to ensure adequate planning time for teachers. David Steele, General Director of Secondary Education, will continue to assist and monitor high school daily schedules in order to ensure the provision of teacher planning time.
