EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Tampa Preservation, Inc. has given an award to Hillsborough County Public Schools recognizing the outstanding preservation of Hillsborough High School.
In addition to replacing the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), instructional television security, fire protection systems, asbestos abatement, insulation of the attic and crawlspaces, repair of gutters and downspouts, renovations to the kitchen servery area, and the addition of data, intercom, fire alarm, and security systems for the classroom portables, the project team of Wilder Architecture, Inc. and Allstate Construction, Inc. collaborated to preserve as much of the school's original character as possible. The $28,000,000 project included removing dropped ceilings to reveal fifteen-foot ceilings, barrel vaults and column capitals, uncovering and refinishing hardwood and terrazzo floors, refurbishing original light fixtures, refurbishing and reinstalling stained glass windows, and updating lighting fixtures to replicate the original 1920's fixtures in areas where the original fixtures were either missing or beyond repair. The project also included remodeling of the existing Gymnasium and renovating a single story wing used for ROTC and classrooms.
