SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Technical Services Agreement for Steve Barkley, of Performance Learning Systems, Inc. to Provide Professional Development Training and Support for Teachers at Davis Elementary School. (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Steve Barkley has provided professional development for schools in Hillsborough County for several years. His training of school faculties has created culture shifts that help teachers better utilize Professional Learning Communities to strategically focus on student data and instructional needs in order to increase student achievement. Davis Elementary will be utilizing Title I staff development dollars to pay for two days of training. Mr. Barkley will train teachers on a tool that will help to better determine student learning and working styles. He will provide ideas on how to create WOW's through his book, Wow! Adding Pizzazz to Teaching and Learning. He will also provide a session on “Teambuilding in Professional Learning Communities.” On follow-up days, Mr. Barkley will coach teachers and staff through Professional Learning Communities and enhance the school’s peer coaching environment.

This Technical Services Agreement will be paid with Davis Elementary School's Title I Staff Development dollars. ($7,000)

EVALUATION

The leadership team, along with the staff at Davis Elementary, will review student achievement data quarterly to determine the effectiveness of the peer coaching support, as well as the Professional Learning Communities training provided by Mr. Barkley. At the conclusion of the year, qualitative data will also be collected from each participating staff member to determine the impact this training and support had on professional growth and student performance. All data collected will be used in determining future contracts.
