Approve Revised Fee Schedule for Community Education Fee-Based Driver Education Course (Adult and Community Education)

We request approval for the revised fee schedule for the Driver Education Fee-Based program. The course fee has been revised from a range of $175-$394 to a flat fee of $250 to ensure a standardized rate for all fee-based driver education classes, yet remains lower than private driver education programs in Hillsborough and surrounding counties. Currently, a Hillsborough County high school student, private school student, or community member is charged a different rate for the same driver education course.

The revised fee structure has three key changes. Class size requirements are reduced from 15 to 10 making it easier for sites to fill classes, the instructional time is reduced from 54 hours to 40 as a cost saving measure without affecting course integrity, and driving time has been increased from 8 to 10 hours as recommended by parents and former students. The new course fee is lower than competing private Driver Education programs in the surrounding area. It has been approved by the Supervisor of Social Studies and Driver Education, and meets the guidelines and expectations of the State of Florida Division of Motor Vehicles.

Classes are self-sustaining from fees paid by student participants that cover all direct and indirect expenses. There is no additional cost to the District.
