EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

During the summer of 2008, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) partnered with CDC to pilot a youth leadership development training curriculum for 12 East Tampa high school students. Based on evaluation data gathered during the 2008/09 school year, 83% of the students completing the leadership development training had increased their grade point average.

Based on last year's data, HCPS and CDC will expand the program to 30 students for the summer of 2009. Along with the school district, CDC is partnering with The City of Tampa and Hillsborough County to provide the youth leadership development training program. This summer program offers a structured environment where students will learn marketable skills along with providing the motivation, organization, and self sufficiency needed to achieve academic and employment goals.

This contract, specifically, provides the funds necessary to develop summer program curriculum activities, as well as supports a college tour experience for participating youth.

EVALUATION

A pre and post test will be administered to participating students to determine if the objectives of the summer program were achieved. By December 2009, the grade point averages of participating students will be reviewed and these results will be shared with district staff. The pre and post test results, along with the student achievement data, will be analyzed to determine the success of the program and future contracts with the vendor.
