Approve the Agreement for Technical Services with Computer Mentors Group Inc. to Provide a Computer Technician Course for Students Attending Ferrell, Franklin, Greco, Memorial, and Young Middle Schools, Leslie Peters Halfway House, ACTS of Tampa, and Falkenburg Academy (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

During the summer of 2008, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) partnered with Computer Mentors Group Inc. to provide a Computer Technician Certification Course for students attending Ferrell, Franklin, Greco, Memorial, and Young Middle Schools, Leslie Peters Halfway House, ACTS of Tampa, and Falkenburg Academy. A total of 59 students completed the course with 86% earning a grade of C or better based on post test results, lab work, attendance, and participation. Based on these results, the school district will partner with Computer Mentors Group Inc. to offer a Computer Technician Certification Course during June 2009.

As part of this summer program initiative, Computer Mentors Group Inc. will provide 32 hours of computer technician training, including hands on lab work for students. Each student participating will refurbish a personal computer that they will be able to keep at the conclusion of the course. This contract will pay for curriculum materials, course facilitators, used computers, and student tool kits.

This contract will be paid using Title I funds in the amount of $33,270.

EVALUATION

At the conclusion of the summer program, district staff will review student survey data and course completion data to determine the effectiveness of the instruction provided. This information will be used in determining future contracts with the vendor.
