EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce honored two Hillsborough County Public School employees on April 2, 2009, at the annual Military Appreciation Banquet, in the Hyatt Regency Ballroom. Esteemed award presenters included the Honorable Mayor Pam Iorio; the Chief of Staff, United States Central Command, Major General Jay Hood; and the Military Affairs Council Chairman, Retired Major General Fred Raymond. Jan Wheeler, the Military Property Custodian for Hillsborough County Public Schools Army JROTC, received the Special Service Award. This award is bestowed upon an exceptional civilian employee by the Military Affairs Council of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce. This Special Service Award is granted in recognition of sustained interest and continued participation in activities which provide significant service to the Tampa Bay Community on a voluntary, non-duty basis. Since becoming the Military Property Custodian four years ago, Jan Wheeler has regularly volunteered to chaperone Cadets at Army JROTC competitive events, has volunteered as a scorekeeper at State Drill Meets and regularly attends various weekend events in support of “her Cadets.” She received a beautiful plaque from the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce commemorating this recognition, as well as letters of congratulations from the Honorable Governor Charlie Crist and the Honorable Congressman Gus Bilarakus. Cadet Kelly St. Onge is the Battalion Executive Officer in the Plant City High School Army JROTC program. Kelly won the JROTC Essay Contest. This contest was open to all 24 JROTC programs within Hillsborough County. This year’s subject was Patriotism, Citizenship, and Responsibility. Kelly received a plaque from the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce to commemorate her achievement, congratulatory letters from the Honorable Governor Charlie Crist and the Honorable Congressman Gus Bilarakus, as well as a $1,000 savings bond, courtesy of Pinch-A-Penny.
