SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Reduction of Maximum Number of Athletic Contests (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In light of recent media coverage and announcements by Florida High School Athletics Association (FHSAA), the Athletics Department would like to inform the School Board of adjustments to the 2009/2010 athletics contests schedule for Hillsborough County Public School teams. This move will assure our compliance with FHSAA Policy 6 Revision, approved by the FHSAA Board of Directors on April 27, 2009.

FHSAA Policy 6 Revision reduces the maximum number of contests that can be scheduled for each sports team and was designed to address the current economic situation, therefore, helping reduce costs of operating high school athletics. The policy will remain in effect for two years only and concludes with the 2010/2011 school year.

Varsity level sports will be reduced by twenty percent, while Junior Varsity sports are to be reduced by forty percent with the exception of football and cheerleading.

The Athletics Department will continue to assess ways to address budgetary concerns while maintaining the maximum levels of quality within the athletic program.
