Adoption of Proclamation – Hillsborough County Public Schools Recognizes October as Domestic Violence Month (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Spring has worked very closely for several years with Hillsborough County Public Schools. The Spring provides services to families in need of shelter during a trying time in their lives. The Spring is a 24 hour emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and their dependent children who have no other safe place to go. Outreach service areas are also available for those who are not seeking shelter. There is a public school classroom on the grounds of The Spring. The school is an alternative education site served by the district’s Homeless Education Program staff. The children and their families are considered homeless. Last school year, the district served over 300 children and their families through the “formal” intake process.

Through the efforts of our district Social Workers, The Spring is able to provide a network of services. James Elementary, Franklin Middle Magnet and Middleton Magnet High School are three schools of focus. Programs such as our district Alternative Education and the Neglected and Delinquent Program provide tutoring and parent literacy services, to mention a few.
