SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Writing With Purpose, Power and Pride (Elementary and Secondary Education-Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Initiative: We want to celebrate the achievements of our young writers and dedicated teachers as a part of the inaugural National Day on Writing presented by the National Council for Teachers of English.

Goals: The goals are as follows:

Targeted Population: All K-12 students are provided opportunities to learn and grow through the art of writing.

Timeline: The power of the writing process and student conferences have become successful practices in K-12 classrooms across our district for over a decade. These shared beliefs have proven to be successful in growing our young writers and demonstrating our strength across the state through high achievement in test scores.

We will continue to promote use of the process, student conferences, and a variety of venues to publish student work. The inaugural National Day on Writing with web-based galleries is just one avenue for highlighting the achievements of our district.

Staff Development: A variety of staff development opportunities are provided based on the needs of our students and teachers. Focus areas include conferencing, Writers’ Workshop, use of elaboration, developing voice, and use of mentor/read aloud text.

Executive Summary is continued on attachment.
