Recognition of Kenly Elementary School for the Healthy Schools Program National Recognition Award at the Silver Level (Student Services and Federal Programs)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Kenly Elementary received the Healthy Schools Program National Recognition Award at the Silver Level. This award was presented by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, which works toward combating childhood obesity.

Kenly Elementary received this award because of their commitment to create a healthier school environment through the promotion of healthy eating habits and by increasing physical activity. Kenly became a “candy free” school two years ago and began to reward students with extra minutes of recess. The staff learned that “playing” was an effective reward and a far healthier option than candy. The staff began to look at other ways to reward students using physical activity. Students are now rewarded for good behavior and attendance with events that focus on moving, such as being invited to an “attendance dance” or a “success picnic".
