Approve Agreement for Technical Services with The Skills Center to Provide Leadership Development Training for Students at Madison and McLane Middle Schools (Administration Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval of an Agreement for Technical Services with The Skills Center that will provide leadership training that addresses the Student Achievement Strategic Objectives of HCPS for students in grades 6 – 8, who are involved in the Extended Learning Programs (ELP) at Madison and McLane Middle Schools. The Skills Center will work with a total of 100 students, four days per week, at each school site, after school in conjunction with the ELP. Students will be in two large groups of 50, alternating days in ELP and with The Skills Center. The combination of ELP and The Skills Center will constitute The 212 Leadership Academy at each of these sites. The impact of this program will affect up to 200 students altogether. Students will participate in interactive programming that includes group dialog, leadership development, sport training, and theory. Students will be taught how to apply and transfer the principles of life skills learned through athletics to other areas of life. Students will concentrate on six core leadership attributes as follows:
  • character
  • responsibility
  • sportsmanship
  • integrity
  • respect
  • teamwork
  • Competencies will include:
    • discipline -- work ethics, goal setting, decision making
    • accountability -- self esteem, relationship building, self confidence, self motivation
    • strategic thinking -- problem solving, conflict resolution, communication
    • The Skills Center will address measurable outcomes that address the increase of social and leadership skills, and the improvement of athletic abilities demonstrated by responsible behaviors and values, and cognitive abilities.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

The program will be funded through the federal Voluntary Public School Choice (VPSC) grant. The cost will be $16,638.

EVALUATION

By June 10, 2010, The Skills Center will complete an evaluation of the measurable outcomes, and school personnel will complete a data analysis of the impact on participation in ELP and achievement.
