TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
The Sheriff's Rising Stars Inaugural Program Held in June 2010 (Administration Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) initiated the leadership program to expose students to activities that will help prepare them for future careers.  The 26 incoming Hillsborough County high school seniors worked as a team, learned to trust each other and discovered that to be a good leader you have to be a good follower. Hundreds of students applied to their schools for the week-long summer academy by writing essays about leadership.  Cooperative efforts for the academy included Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Tampa Police Department, Hillsborough Education Foundation, and MacDill Air Force Base.

Goals:

  • Students will learn to rely on each other.
  • Students will learn leadership skills.
  • Students will learn principles that will enhance their ability to be successful and responsible citizens.

Targeted Population:  Incoming seniors from 26 public high schools.

Timeline:  June 14-18, 2010

Professional/Staff Development:  The week's activities included guest speakers such as Major General George W. Norwood, U.S. Air Force (retired) and Tampa Police Department Chief Jane Castor; hands-on team building exercises; and visits to the HCSO's Marine Unit, the Walter C. Heinrich Practical Training Site, the George E. Edgecomb Courthouse, and the Florida Sheriffs Association Youth Ranch in Safety Harbor.
