Recognition of the American Heart Association for Their Outstanding Contributions to the Instruction of Healthy Lifestyle Curricula to Students in Hillsborough County Public Schools (Secondary Education - Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The American Heart Association is committed to fighting heart disease and stroke and raising awareness of these diseases.  As part of their mission, the American Heart Association focuses on specific causes designed to help people achieve a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The American Heart Association has been instrumental in developing a cadre of students, teachers, and community members capable of performing compression only, bystander Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) to individuals in the Hillsborough County community.  During the 2009/2010 school year, physical education teachers in three middle schools (Monroe, Sligh, Smith) and three high schools (Wharton, Tampa Bay Tech, Freedom) incorporated the CPR Anytime program in their physical education classes.  Students received their own CPR Anytime Program kits and taught basic lifesaving skills to their family and friends.  All high school physical education and health teachers have received training in the CPR Anytime program.  These teachers will provide instruction in basic bystander CPR/AED techniques to students enrolled in the Health Opportunities through Physical Education (H.O.P.E.) course.  The H.O.P.E.  course annually impacts approximately 10,000 students.  Hillsborough County Public Schools received financial benefits of approximately $60,000 for the 2009/2010 school year.
