Recognition of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay Contest Winners and Teenz Ink 2010 Teen Short Story Writing Contest Winners (Middle School Education - Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Van Buren Middle School students were encouraged to write essays on the importance of patriotism. The school's top scoring essays were then submitted to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) "Patriot of Pens" essay contest. Two Van Buren students won at the local level and received $100 each. One of the students went on to place second in the district competition and received an additional $150.

Students throughout the county were invited to participate in the sixth annual Teenz Ink 2010 Teen Short Story Writing Contest. This contest is sponsored by Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Libraries. There were 185 entries in the contest this year. The first place winner in the middle school division was from Rampello Downtown Partnership School. The second place winner hails from Adams Middle School. Winners will be featured on the teens.hcplc.org website. In addition, the first place winner received a $100 gift card, and the second place winner received a $50 gift card.
