Recognition of Additional Hillsborough County Public Schools Receiving the Five Star School Award for the 2009/2010 School Year (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Florida Department of Education first offered the Five Star School Award in 1994/1995.  The award is designed to recognize schools with exemplary programs that fully integrate school and community involvement to produce higher student achievement.

The award includes five categores, which comprise the points of the star:

  • Business Partnership
  • Volunteers
  • School Advisory Councils
  • Family Involvement
  • Student Community Service

Many schools have strong programs in one or more of the areas, but outstanding schools develop strong programs in all five areas.  Furthermore, these components must work together to demonstrate that active community involvement is vital to higher student achievement.  In order to qualify for this award, Five Star School applicants must submit a completed application form and a portfolio, documenting fulfillment of each of the criteria on the application.  A school must achieve 100 percent of the criteria in each of the five categories.

In the 2009/2010 school year 143 Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) qualified for the award, the highest of any county in Florida.   A recognition event was held in October at Alonso High School.  Due to the late release of high school grades, two high schools qualified after the recognition event.  The two schools are King High School, qualifying for the first year, and Chamberlain High School, qualifying for the fifth year.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Motivate students to become responsible learners
