Approve Renewal Contract with the Florida Department of Children and Families for Career Recruitment and Instruction in Basic English (CARIBE) Program for Adult Refugees, Contract #LK137, 2011/2012 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We request approval of the renewal contract for the CARIBE program.  The CARIBE program was initiated in the district in 1998, with grant funds to provide educational services to recent refugees and political asylees.

A renewal standard contract with the Florida Department of Children and Families for the period August 1, 2011 through July 31, 2012, for $1,584,000 has been developed to provide continued programs in English language and workplace readiness skills.  The CARIBE program includes classrooms and computer laboratories at Erwin Technical Center, McDill Columbus Learning Lab, CARIBE at Lois, and CARIBE at First Baptist Church.  The technical training is available at Erwin, Learey, Brewster, Aparicio-Levy, and Tampa Bay Technical Centers.  During the 2010/2011 school year, the CARIBE program served approximately 2,000 students.  Since 1998, CARIBE has successfully served over 17,000 adult students and consistently receives exemplary evaluations for program operations.

This renewal contract in the amount of $1,584,000, with the Department of Children and Families, is for one year and will be included in the divisional special revenue/federal programs budget. Indirect costs are included in the budget.
