TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Possibilities Abound with Hillsborough Virtual School Options (Instructional Program Support- Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  Hillsborough Virtual School (HVS) was established in 2002 as a franchise of the statewide virtual program, Florida Virtual School (FLVS).  Throughout the past eleven years HVS has had many changes (many of which were due to changes and additions to Florida's legislature in an effort to expand virtual education throughout the state).  Today we remain a partner with FLVS to serve students in grades 6-12 and, we have added the elementary full-time option for families who want to virtual school their children at home.

Goals:

  • To offer quality courses and/or full-time program options to students in Hillsborough County who desire a flexible schedule, individualized learning pace and a virtual instruction platform
  • To provide a wider range of school choice to the families in Hillsborough County

Targeted Population:

  • Students in grades 6-12 who co-enroll with HVS and their zoned school to earn additional credit
  • Homeschool students in grades 6-12
  • K-8 families who want to virtual school their students at home

Timeline:

  • 2002 became a FLVS franchise
  • 2008 established a full-time K-8 program as mandated by state statute using a turn-key provider
  • 2010 established a full-time K-5 program using our HCPS elementary instructors and delivering a full district operated elementary model
