Update on the Progress of Teacher Evaluation (Information and Technology Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Teachers have now received their first year results under the new teacher evaluation system.  Teachers were evaluated this year by both their principal and their peer or mentor evaluators; a value-added score based upon the academic growth of their students was also used and counted as 40% of the overall evaluation.

As part of the process of communicating results, teachers have received several explanatory emails and reports as well as access to a video describing their reports.  On September 28, teachers will be notified of their final Merit Award Program status.

Battelle for Kids conducted presentations for principals, school Classroom Teachers Association representatives, and Empowering Effective Teachers liaisons, who will, in turn, conduct further faculty meeting sessions.

In reading results, it's critically important to keep in mind the new scale.  On the written evaluations, for example, about the same number of teachers received outstanding ratings in each category as did last year.  However, on the current scale - because we now have an Exemplary category - those outstanding ratings range from 40 to 60 rather than the previous maximum of 144 points.

The new evaluation is not just about rating teachers.  The wealth of information gathered has resulted in prescribed professional development and the Battelle for Kids reports provide principals with actionable  data to direct instruction at the school.

Attachments to this item illustrate this year's rating frequencies as well as samples of the reports delivered to teachers.
