SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Public Hearing to Consider the Adoption of a Resolution to Redistrict the Five School Board Single-Member Voting Districts as Required by Florida Law (Facilities Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On September 6, 2011, the School Board approved the scheduling and advertising of a public hearing on October 4, 2011, to adopt new district boundaries for the five single-member School Board voting districts.  (Appendix H) Three alternatives were prepared by the Planning Commission and Supervisor of Elections staffs.  At the September 6, 2011, Board meeting a request was made to modify one of the alternatives, creating a fourth alternative.  A workshop was held on September 13, 2011, where there was a request to include a fifth alternative, but the changes requested would have resulted in an alternative that did not comply with the Federal guidelines for redistricting, and no additional option was prepared.

The four alternative single-member districts  have been available for public inspection and have been advertised in accordance with Florida Statutes.  The four alternatives are shown in Appendix G of the attached background report.  The School Board is required to adopt a resolution (Appendix I) establishing the new School Board single-member voting districts.  The School Board may adopt any of the four alternatives or may modify them in such a way that the resulting map complies with the Federal guidelines.
