SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve a Partnership Between Hillsborough County Public Schools, Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, and the Center for Teaching Quality (CTQ) for the Creation of Two Teacherpreneur Positions (Information and Technology Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In May of 2011, CTQ launched the New Millennium Initiative in Hillsborough County Public Schools with a cadre of 14 teacher leaders, adding another 32 to the team in January 2012.  These accomplished teachers represent all grade levels and all school contexts.  They serve in a myriad of leadership roles from peer evaluator to new teacher mentor to pre-service educator.

CTQ is in the process of preparing a three year proposal to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to extend this work and would like to include the District as a partner.  In this partnership, CTQ would provide the District with two teacherpreneur positions.  This position dovetails well with the teacher leader that the District has identified as a future position on the new career ladder.  Teacherpreneurs are school-based teacher leaders in hybrid roles, who split their time between teaching and leading, giving them the ability to serve a major role in supporting teachers regardless of their experience level.  This will help ensure a robust system of support for all teachers.

Upon receiving approval of their proposal, CTQ will provide funding for two half time positions that would free current teachers to assume the role of teacherpreneur. The two teacherpreneurs will have different responsibilities: one will pilot implementation of the teacher leader career ladder role at the school level, and the other will work with the Center for Technology and Education on the development of Teacher Learning Communities in the District.
