TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Hillsborough County Public Schools New Teacher Induction Program
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  The program was initially designed in response to the Florida state statute that mandates districts provide an induction program for all new teachers.  The addition of fully released mentors adds a component to the induction program which makes it more robust in the support of new teacher development.

Goals:  The goal of mentors is to support new teachers in all aspects of classroom practice.  Through this support, we hope to increase teacher retention and accelerate teacher effectiveness in order to positively impact student learning.

Targeted Population:  The Teacher Induction Program targets every teacher who enters our district. Those who have less than 6 months of paid teaching experience as the teacher of record receive a mentor for their first and second year of teaching.   All of our district K-12 schools receive mentor support for their new teachers.

Timeline:  The Teacher Induction Program was initiated in school sites August 2010.  As we enter the third year of our program, our plan is to continue to provide support to all first and second year teachers.  As our program continues to grow, we look forward to a partnership with the Principal Pipeline and Teacher Leader programs to build capacity at school sites.

Professional/Staff Development:  Mentors have received a vast amount of training through our district’s partnership with both New Teacher Center and Cambridge Education.  Mentor training through New Teacher Center has focused extensively on mentoring language, new teacher support, relationship building, and the nuances of feedback.  This training is ongoing throughout the school year. In addition, mentors receive in-the-field observations and coaching to support their growth.  Trainings with Cambridge Education have provided mentors with the tools to effectively conduct formal observations and deliver evaluation feedback to teachers.

Transferability:  This program is currently in place at all of our district K-12 schools.

Involvement:  In addition to our partnership with New Teacher Center, the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association has played an integral role in supporting the growth and implementation of the Mentor Program.   The staff of the Wallace Grant, including the director and the principal coaches, works in conjunction with the Mentor Program to align administrative and mentor support for new teachers.
