TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
SpringBoard: The Official Pre-Advanced Placement Curriculum from the CollegeBoard (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) implementation of a district-wide College and Career Readiness program includes two components; academic rigor for all students and a comprehensive support system.  HCPS implemented SpringBoard, a Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) curriculum, for all students in 6th - 12th grade English courses and certain math courses at middle and high school level.

Goals:

  • To provide students with rigorous academic courses
  • To open access for all students regardless of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds into Pre-AP course work
  • To provide teachers, administrators, and counselors with professional development designed to promote college and career readiness
  • To promote a college and career ready culture at all middle and high schools
  • To align with Florida and Common Core State Standards for college and career readiness in English and math classes

Targeted Population: All students in 6th - 12th grade English and math for a total of approximately 95,000 students.

Professional/Staff Development:  Professional Development is provided throughout the year for teachers, administrators, and counselors.  In 2011/2012, over 2,500 teachers participated in SpringBoard related professional development. Throughout the summer, teachers are provided with the opportunity to attend a variety of SpringBoard trainings that focus on delivery and content. As instructional leaders at their school sites, administrators are also provided with the opportunity to attend these trainings and to attend a CollegeBoard SpringBoard Colloquium at the beginning of every school year.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
