SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Hillsborough County Public Schools “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD)  Initiative
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Growing student and staff demands to bring and use personal devices on campus require a strategy built on four bring your own device concerns.

  • Curriculum Alignment – The use of the personal devices should be tied directly to the academic purpose of the instructional program. Without curriculum alignment, BYOD programs add little actual value to learning activities.
  • Equity – The school will need to take responsibility to ensure all students have at least temporary access to a personal device in the classroom or before and after school.
  • Technical Capacity – The District must ensure that the infrastructure within the site can accommodate a greatly increased number of personal user devices that will seek access over the school network without negatively impacting network performance.
  • Policy / Procedures – A formal BYOD Policy is critical from a network access control, (NAC) perspective, since personally owned devices present risks to network security and stability.  Schools are also charged with providing a safe and secure learning environment that includes filtering inappropriate content.  Procedures concerning the support and daily use will need to be a part of an Acceptable/Responsible Use Policy.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
