SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Recognize the Implementation of the Maritime Program at Jefferson High School (Career, Technical, and Adult Education)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We request recognition of the Maritime program being implemented at Jefferson High School for the 2013/2014 school year.

The Career and Technical Education Department has been working with the local maritime community in the development of a maritime industry curriculum that covers all aspects of the industry as well as its global impact. This is the first of its kind in the nation as not only a public school course offering, but also as an approved course with state standards.

Most of the work in the maritime industry revolves around the transportation of goods across the world’s waters.  This multi-billion dollar industry depends on quality individuals to man the ships, operate port facilities, provide security, process the transactions, and ensure that the flow of goods is conducted in the most efficient and safe manner.  While trade is the main focus of the maritime industry it is not the only important aspect.  Maritime workers are involved in mining for natural resources, performing scientific expeditions, providing disaster relief functions, building offshore wind farms, and providing support for coastal communities.  In addition, there are many shore support jobs in the maritime industry where, by some accounts, eight people are needed to support every one person at sea.

Due to the current job growth in the national maritime industry along with the collaboration between the local industry and the school district, the timing of this public school program along with this partnership will allow students to have first-hand experiences and educational opportunities in our local maritime community that will allow the student to select a successful career path in this expansive industry.  In addition, this program will allow the students to have the opportunity to enter into any of the maritime colleges around the nation which in turn will lead the student to future success in a maritime career.
