Recognition of US Games and Sunflower Marketing for Partnering with the American Heart Association to Support and Sponsor the Elementary School Running Club Initiative (Elementary Education – Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In August 2012, the District partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) to establish and promote Elementary School Running Clubs.  A Children's Running Program training was held on February 11, 2013, to provide site facilitators with strategies and resources for maintaining developmentally appropriate youth running programs.

Funding for the Elementary School Running Club Initiative was provided to the American Heart Association by US Games and Sunflower Marketing.  The 69 elementary schools that currently sponsor running clubs will receive a $100 stipend or an equipment voucher that can be used at their discretion.

This initiative supports healthy lifestyles for students, parents and teachers. In addition to increased health benefits, research suggests that students receiving additional physical activity show increased brain function, higher energy and concentration levels, increased self-esteem and better behavior which support cognitive learning.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
