SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Contract with Agile Mind to Provide the Intensified Algebra Program to High School Students in Hillsborough County (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Agile Mind proposes to provide 2,800 students, 56 teachers, and 27 high school campuses with its Intensified Algebra program.  Intensified Algebra I is an intervention course for students who enter algebra one to two years below their grade level.  Struggling students need a combination of additional time, a challenging curriculum, and cohesive, targeted support and intervention.

The district currently has piloted this program in six schools with eleven teachers. The initial analyses of the results for the district algebra test demonstrate that the students in the program are performing at a higher level than their peers (students currently enrolled in Algebra 1B and have taken Algebra).  Intensified Algebra students’ scores are significantly higher than students in Algebra 1B.  Even more promising is the comparison of the Intensified Algebra students to the students who are regular Algebra 1 students.  There is no significant difference between the Intensified Algebra students and the regular algebra students.  This means that the students who entered the Intensified Algebra class because of their extremely low performance are now performing on par with students in the Algebra 1 course.  An additional comparison will be conducted after the Algebra EOC test scores return at the end of the year.

We are very excited to be able to expand and offer this program to all our high schools and watch our students become a community of high achieving learners.

This agreement shall terminate on June 30, 2018.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
The total, not to exceed $1,375,775 for the five-year period, is available from the Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI) funds.
EVALUATION
To promote enactment and implementation of Intensified Algebra, advisor services are scheduled during the school year.   Advisors conduct presession analyses of school data and conduct interviews with district staff to customize advice to meet participant needs.  Advisors share the experiences of educators in other settings and work directly with teachers to develop their confidence and their success using Intensified Algebra.
