Read On myON Summer Reading Challenge (Elementary Education)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On January 24, 2012, the Board approved the community-based reading initiative Read On myON between Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS), the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, United Way Suncoast, Tampa Housing Authority, Early Learning Coalition, and Board of County Commissioners Head Start which provided all the children of Hillsborough County (prekindergarten-8th grade) with access to myON Reader from Capstone Digital.

In an effort to curb summer reading loss, all K-8 grade students were provided a summer reading challenge as a part of the Read On myON initiative.  Summer reading in myON included:

  • Weekly challenges for which there were over 1,500 entries and 38 students receiving prizes.
  • The Big Challenge that encompassed the entire summer where students could enter the contest by reading at least 10 books in myON.  Over 900 students entered this challenge and the grand prize winners were from Clark, Doby, and Tampa Palms Elementary Schools, and Guinta Middle School.
  • HCPS students competed in the National myON Summer Reading Challenge against 4,200 schools and more than 65,000 students nationwide.  A student from Bartels Middle School placed first place in this category.  Out of the top 100 myON Readers in the National Challenge, 22 were from HCPS.
  • School Enrichment Resource Volunteers, Inc. (SERVE), Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, and HCPS Voluntary PreK Summer Reading Buddies Volunteer Program impacted 100 preschool students with 605 books read in myON.
  • From June 10, 2013, through August 15, 2013, there were 454,815 books opened in myON and 219,588 books read.
  • Read On myON Project grand total was 2,750,624 books read as of July 31, 2013.
