Music Education in Hillsborough County Public Schools (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Hillsborough County Public Schools has just been recognized for the twelfth time as one of the Best Communities for Music Education 2014 by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM).

We have comprehensive music education as part of the curriculum for grades 1-12.  Every student has the opportunity to take some form of music.  Hillsborough County Public Schools music curriculum follows the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards adopted in 2010.  The curriculum includes curriculum maps, vocabulary guides, and assessments as well as performance assessments such as Music Performance Assessments (MPA).

Music instruction is offered to elementary students for 60 minutes per week and 50 minutes daily for middle and high school students. Various music-making opportunities are available through instrumental, choral, and general music classes.

Funding for transportation to district events is supported with Part I budget funds.  In addition, secondary schools with booster accounts provide additional funding when needed.  Instrument replacement is based on a rotating cycle as well as the specific needs of individual schools.  Elementary schools may purchase additional instruments and/or materials through any available school funds, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) donations, and grant funds.  High school marching band uniforms are on a nine year rotation with uniforms purchased for three schools each year. Performance uniforms are not mandatory in elementary and middle schools.  High school marching band uniforms are mandatory by the district while other performance attire varies by individual schools and is not required by the district.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
