EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Safe Passage Act of the 2001 Legislature was passed to ensure every child a safe passage through Florida’s education system.  The goal is for every district to have a clearly stated safety and security program that is effective, cost efficient, and includes comprehensive plans and procedures promoting the safety and security of students and staff, ensuring that facilities and equipment are safe and in good working condition, and addressing the safe transportation of students.  The first Best Practices was developed by OPPAGA and the Partnership for School Safety and Security and approved by the Commissioner of Education in 2001.

The attached self-assessment and narrative serves to assure that Hillsborough County Public Schools is in compliance with Florida Statute 1006.07(6), Safety and Security Best Practices.  Strategies and actions were reviewed for the 2013/2014 school year by a district committee, which included members of Safety and Risk Management, School Security, Student Nutrition Services, Transportation, School Health Services, Psychological Services, Athletics, Professional Development, Curriculum and Instruction, and Administration.  The strategies and actions have been aligned with the district’s Strategic Plan.
