Tampa Bay Buccaneers National Football League (NFL) /Play 60 Initiative (Academic Support and Federal Programs Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in a collaborative effort with the NFL and the American Heart Association, encourage students to play 60 minutes each day.

Goals: To promote exercise and healthy eating.

Targeted Population: Students in kindergarten through fifth grade at the 21 Buccaneers Academies.

Timeline: The Play 60 Challenge begins each year in January and continues for approximately six weeks. Celebrations and prizes are awarded in February.

Professional/Staff Development: Physical Education coaches at all Buccaneers Academies receive training prior to the Play 60 Challenge kick-off.

Transferability:

Involvement: Students use an activity tracker to record the number of minutes they stay active each day. Teachers review and report the classroom total number of minutes on the classroom poster weekly.

Kindergarten through fourth grade Buccaneers Academy students compete against other kindergarten - fourth grade students in their school. Students could win up to $5,000 in physical education equipment for their school.  One winning classroom at each Buccaneers Academy will receive a Buccaneers themed Play 60 classroom kit. 

Fifth grade Buccaneers Academy students become a team and compete against other fifth grade teams. The winning Buccaneers Academies are awarded a Play 60 celebration with Buccaneers players and cheerleaders attending.  The top five schools with the highest average minutes played receive cash prizes to purchase physical education equipment.  Cash prize amounts are $2,000 to the first place school, $1,500 to the second place school, $750 to the third place school, $500 to the fourth place school, and $250 to the fifth place school.
