Approve the Renewal of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) College Readiness System Services and Products Agreement and the Implementation of the AVID College Readiness System Support Agreement for 2015/2016 (Curriculum and Instruction Division) | |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
We are requesting approval of the Renewal Agreement with the AVID Center to continue the program operation which has expanded since 2004 to include 73 school sites (all middle and high schools). AVID impacts as many as 9,000 students annually through AVID elective classes. With its focus on leadership, systems, instruction, and culture, the AVID program is designed to prepare students for postsecondary success. The Agreement outlines member roles, materials, trainings, and fees associated with AVID Center. A list of participating schools and a summary of the program are included in the attached Agreement. In addition, we are requesting approval of the AVID College Readiness System Support Agreement to provide one full-time staff member to support the AVID College Readiness System in Hillsborough County's current 73 AVID sites and work in conjunction with the current Hillsborough AVID staff. This position will be funded by AVID Center.
The AVID Center requires The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida to be the first signature on the AVID College Readiness System Support Agreement (Staff Person). |

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes) | |
Funds not to exceed $230,000 will include: the annual membership fee for 73 schools; various products and services for AVID Secondary; AVID Excel; and 2 AVID elementary sites. Funds not to exceed $270,000 will be an additional cost for participation at the 2015 AVID Summer Institute held in Tampa for 400 HCPS teachers, counselors, and administrators. The listed amounts will be funded through Project 5378, EXCELerator. | |
EVALUATION | |
According to AVID Center Data for 2014: of HCPS AVID seniors, 80% applied to a four year college or university; 60% were accepted into a four year college or university; 99.4% graduated from high school; 88.8% completed four year college requirements; 79% took one or more Advanced Placement classes and had an average grade point average of 3.62. Of those seniors, 76% of those students had been in AVID for three or more years. This past school year, HCPS was awarded $161,483 from the Florida Department of Education based on the number of AVID students that were successful on End of Course and Advanced Placement exams. | |
