| Approve the Piggyback Between Laser Cartridges Plus and General Services Administration (GSA), Contract #GS-14F-0035M Office Products/Supplies and Services and New Products/Technology (Curriculum and Instruction Division) | |
| EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
| Laser Cartridges Plus is an authorized MakerBot distributor. If approved, the Division of Curriculum and Instruction will be utilizing the GSA contract to purchase 40 MakerBot 3D printers. The MakerBot 3D printers will be used to augment Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) lessons, which will be developed by teachers at the school sites who will receive the devices. 3D printing provides several features that can aid in the learning and teaching process: providing teachers with 3D visual aids for use in illustrating a hard to grasp concept; engaging the learner through creating their own 3D representations of objects; enhancing hands-on learning through the utilization of prototyping technology; and producing models for engineering, architecture, and multi-media arts and mathematical design.
The initial term of the GSA contract expires May 28, 2017; Hillsborough County Public Schools will commence its use effective March 25, 2015. This contract may be renewed by the Superintendent, per the terms of the specifications. In accordance with the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), Purchasing Policy 6A-1.012(6), in lieu of requesting competitive solicitations from three or more sources, district school boards may make purchases at or below the specified prices from contracts awarded by other city or county governmental agencies, or other district school boards. |
