Approve Funding for the 2015 Hillsborough Scholars Summer Academy (HSSA) (Curriculum and Instruction Division) |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY |
The 2015 HSSA is a week-long, fee-based, academic camp designed for the 3,600 highly talented rising eighth grade students who were invited to take the American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) as part of the Duke Talent Identification Program or Hillsborough Talent Identification Program. Approximately 300 students will attend the camp, which will be held at the University of Tampa (UT). Students may choose to attend from one of two sessions being held June 8-12, 2015, or June 22-26, 2015. HSSA courses are taught by Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) instructors in collaboration with UT professors. Students will select from the following courses: Discover the Code, Follow the Clues, It’s Electric, Bodies in Motion, Phun with Physics, Photo Finish, and Cool Chemistry of Life.

HSSA (Project 4121) is funded through student registration fees. The fees cover personnel salaries (HCPS staff and UT professors), dining at UT, materials, and supplies. Title I provides tuition assistance in the form of scholarships for students that are on free and reduced lunch. Permission is requested to add/or delete instructional staff as necessary and to make necessary payments and purchases with an estimated camp cost of $97,607.

EVALUATION |
HSSA surveys will be distributed to parents and students at the end of the HSSA session and recommendations and adjustments will be taken into consideration for the following school year. |
