Recognition of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) District Model Schools (Student Services Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) has been implemented in 52 Hillsborough County Public Schools and 1 charter school (B.T. Washington, Clark, Clair-Mel, Colson, Crestwood, Desoto, Dover, Frost, Graham, Heritage, Hunter’s Green, Ippolito, Jackson, Just, Kenly, Kimbell, Lewis, Lockhart, Mango, Miles, MOSI, Palm River, Pizzo, Potter, Pride, Robinson, Schmidt, Shaw, Phillip Shore, Smith, Summerfield, Thonotosassa, Temple Terrace, Walden Lake, Westshore, Woodbridge and Yates Elementary Schools; Greco, McLane, Memorial, Pierce, Progress Village, Marshall, and Young Middle Schools; Turner-Bartels K-8;  Middleton and Alonso High Schools; Brandon, North Tampa Alternative Schools; Simmons and Carver Exceptional Centers; and Woodmont Charter School).  PBS is a collaborative, educative, proactive, and functional process used to develop effective interventions for problem behavior.  PBS is not a packaged program with a set script; rather, it is a process individualized to meet the specific needs of each school.  The program relies on accurate and reliable discipline referral data to understand the behaviors occurring across school campuses. An analysis of the data allows a school team to identify behavior trends, brainstorm interventions such as where and what to teach, reward students exhibiting expected behavior, and communicate findings to the staff, students, and families.  The PBS process is a team-based approach that relies on a strong collaboration between families and professionals from a variety of disciplines.

Florida's PBS Multi-Tiered Support System recognizes model schools at the bronze, silver, and gold levels. As Bronze Level PBS Model Schools, Heritage Elementary School and Thonotosassa Elementary School report a comprehensive system of support at Tier 1.  Critical elements of Tier 1 PBS are implemented with fidelity, and data are utilized within a problem-solving framework in order to improve the outcomes of students.  As a Silver Level PBS Model School, Pizzo Elementary reports all of the characteristics of Bronze-Level schools and implement with higher levels of fidelity.  Silver-Level schools “drill down” into their data to ensure that their Tier 1 system is effective for all groups of students, and have taken steps to build systems of support for behavior at Tier 2. As a Gold Level PBS Model School, Hugo Schmidt Elementary reports all of the characteristics of Bronze- and Silver-Level schools, implements PBS with the highest levels of fidelity, and has developed systems of support across all tiers.  Gold-Level schools exceed their peers in both the quality and depth of implementation across all three tiers of support.
