SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Selection of Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) School Board Legislative Committee Representative and Alternate
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In order to encourage equal representation of all school boards in the legislative efforts of FSBA, their Bylaws call for each school board to annually designate a school board member to serve as their Legislative Liaison on the FSBA Legislative Committee. The Legislative Liaisons are the core of the FSBA Legislative Committee, serving as key authors of the FSBA Legislative Platform, and advocates in state and federal lobbying efforts. Legislative Liaisons are offered additional training opportunities to enhance their advocacy skills, general knowledge of the legislative process, and specific knowledge of key state and federal education issues.

A recent revision to Article XI, Section I of the FSBA Bylaws now require each district school board to designate a Legislative Committee Representative and Alternate annually in June. Accordingly, school boards must choose one of these two options:

  • Option 1 – Retain your district's current FSBA Legislative Committee Representative and Alternate through June 2016.
  • Option 2 – Designate a new FSBA Legislative Committee Representative and Alternate to serve from the date of the designation through June 2016.

During the July 14, 2015, School Board Meeting, the Board selected Option 1 and directed Superintendent Eakins to bring an agenda item to the July 28, 2015, School Board Meeting. Member Cindy Stuart and Chair Susan L. Valdes have agreed to continue serving as FSBA Legislative Committee Representative and Alternate, respectively, through June 2016.
