TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Hillsborough Virtual School (HVS) - The Benefits of Virtual Choice in Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative: HVS is the school district virtual school that serves the needs of a variety of students in HCPS.  Our instructors work to meet the needs of students who are enrolled in Kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12).

Goals: To educate the HCPS community and Hillsborough County residents about the benefits of the Hillsborough Virtual School program compared to other options; to offer a variety of quality courses to students in Hillsborough County who desire flexible schedules, individualized learning paces, and a virtual instruction platform; to provide an opportunity for students in Hillsborough County brick and mortar schools to fulfill needs such as the online graduation requirement, credit recovery, acceleration, and gifted instruction. Also, for HVS to use a blended learning format with alternative education students.

Targeted Population: HVS serves K-12 students who want to use virtual curriculum as a full-time school choice; as a home education curricula choice; for gifted students in some elementary schools; for co-enrolled students; for some credit recovery needs; and with some alternative education students.

Timeline: HVS began as a franchise of Florida Virtual School in 2002 serving high school students on a part-time basis.

Professional/Staff Development: All teachers are required to attend face-to-face and online professional development trainings specific to the courses and curriculum providers being used as well as professional development that is required for all HCPS teachers.

Transferability: The curriculum meets Florida Standards as well as those of College Board for advanced placement courses.

Involvement: HVS constantly works to market themselves through involvement with our business partners.  In addition, HVS provides general information to the public at advertised information sessions, works with the district's Choice Office, and regularly communicates any updates to students and parents through guidance counselors, the district's website, and other social media.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
