| Recognition of the 2015 Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) Champion Award (Curriculum and Instruction Division) | |
| EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
| As a component of the recently funded Tampa Bay STEM Network, HCPS will annually recognize an individual and an organization that has a track record of supporting STEM initiatives in our schools through direct participation or providing support, financial or otherwise, for events and programs that make a difference in the lives of our students by immersing them in STEM experiences otherwise not available to them. This year’s individual STEM Champion is Ken Fiallos, a retired HCPS engineer who has supported our district through the development and management of multiple STEM competitions and events for our students, such as Electrathon, BizBots, and other robotics competitions. Mr. Fiallos founded the Tampa Bay Robotics Alliance, a not-for-profit that supports HCPS robotics competitions. He also was instrumental in developing Electrathon of Tampa Bay, which now flourishes with competitors from HCPS, colleges, universities, and interest groups.
This year’s organizational STEM Champion is the University of Tampa’s College of Natural and Health Sciences which has supported thousands of HCPS students in events such as the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year, Advanced Placement Biology Day, and Advanced Placement Chemistry Day over the past six school years. |
