TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) in Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative: AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in global society.

Goals: Provide students with the skills needed to succeed in rigorous curriculum; provide students and families with college and career awareness; provide leadership skills and opportunities for students; increase the level of support for students; provide teachers with meaningful professional development in AVID strategies regardless of content area; and to bridge the transition gap for students entering high school and students entering college.

Targeted Population: AVID impacts more than 9,000 students in HCPS middle and high schools.  These students are served through the AVID elective class during the school day.

Timeline: In 2004, the School Board approved the initial agreement with AVID Center for three sites.  In 2008, that agreement moved to include all middle and high schools.

Professional/Staff Development: AVID professional development has been completed by 2,898 teachers, counselors, administrators, and district staff since the start of AVID in HCPS in the form of AVID Summer Institutes or AVID Path trainings.  AVID district staff provided trainings throughout the year to AVID teachers and content area teachers in topics ranging from Cornell Note training to time management and organization.  AVID strategy trainings have been conducted with staff from career centers, alternative centers, and Hillsborough Virtual School.  AVID has had the opportunity to offer three sessions at the Advanced Placement Summer Institute held at the University of South Florida (USF) focused on using AVID strategies in Advanced Placement (AP) and other content areas.

Transferability:  AVID is a recognized course in the Florida Course Code Directory.  AVID standards are followed in the implementation of the AVID curriculum in grades 6-12.

Involvement:  AVID Center, Secondary Education, Elementary Education, Programs for English Language Learners, Guidance Services, USF, Hillsborough Community College, The College Board, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), and The Bailey Family Foundation.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Motivate students to become responsible learners
