Approve the Renewal Implementation Agreement with the Center for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The renewal agreement has been developed for the 2016/2017 school year to continue the program operation, which has expanded since 2004 to include 74 school sites (elementary, middle, and high schools).  AVID impacts as many as 9,000 students annually through the AVID elective class.  With its focus on leadership, systems, instruction, and culture, the AVID program is designed to prepare students for postsecondary success.  This agreement outlines member roles, materials, trainings, and fees associated with the AVID Center.  A list of participating schools and a summary of the program is attached.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
Funds in the amount of $356,825.00 will be available in the EXCELerator budget; Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) budget; and the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) AVID budget. For tracking purposes, the project number specific to this agenda item is 5378, 2981, and 2952. As of Monday, May 23, 2016, the remaining balance less encumbrances for this line item equaled $633,724.51.
EVALUATION
Data provided by the AVID Center reflects the following for the 2015 Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) seniors:  80 percent applied to a 4-year college or university; 55 percent were accepted into a 4-year college or university; 43 percent plan on attending a 2-year college or technical school; 98.3 percent graduated from high school; 85.3 percent completed 4-year college requirements; 77 pecent took 1 or more Advanced Placement (AP) classes and had an average grade-point average of 3.68.  Of those seniors, 80.8 percent had been in AVID for 3 or more years.  In middle school AVID: 73 percent of 8th graders completed Algebra 1 or a higher level math.  This past school year, HCPS was awarded $222,262.63 from the FLDOE based on the number of AVID students that were successful on End of Course (EOC) and AP exams.
