Approve the Memorandum of Agreement with the Lightning Foundation, Inc. to Implement Multiple Educational Programs (Community Relations)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Community Hockey Department (CHD) of the Tampa Bay Lightning has proposed a partnership and opportunity for up to 100 students who attend Title 1 schools to participate in the following initiatives. It’s a great opportunity for our students to learn how to play hockey, earn better grades, and learn leadership skills.

  • Equip the Thunder - all fourth and fifth grade students will have the opportunity to participate in a street hockey clinic during physical education time, with parental consent
  • Guide the Thunder - as many as 100 selected students will participate in an off-site, after-school weekly hockey lessons at no cost.  Additionally, students will receive tutoring, mentoring, meals, transportation, equipment, school uniforms, and supplies as needed.
  • Professional Development and Curriculum Integration through Physical Education - all middle school coaches will be trained in the skills and game of hockey with the intent to integrate into physical education curriculum.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum • Align financial resources to support the district's strategic goals • Demonstrate best financial practices • Promote a culture of safety, which is free from harassment, bullying, and aggression • Demonstrate "best practices" in all aspects of safety including students, employees, visitors, facilities, transportation, and health • Construct and maintain facilities that create an environment conducive to teaching and learning
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
The CHD will provide up to $636,223.60 over the next 5 years, or $124,244.72 annually, toward the implementation of the above programs. There will not be a cost for Hillsborough County Public Schools.
EVALUATION
The district will provide an annual report to CHD evaluating the impact, and assess changes as needed to continue programming.
