Swim Safety Initiative Program for the Hillsborough County Public Schools Head Start Program (Academic Support and Federal Programs Division) | |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) Head Start was excited to be part of Phase 2 of the Swim Safety Initiative program for approximately 450 HCPS Head Start students. The program included both classroom curriculum presented by Head Start staff and swim lessons provided by certified swim instructors. HCPS partnered with Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation, Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center, the City of Tampa, the City of Temple Terrace, and YMCA locations throughout the county. A short video will be shown. | |

Funds in the amount of $28,000.00 will be available in the Head Start federal grant. For tracking purposes, the project number specific to this agenda item is 2902. As of Monday, June 6, 2016, the remaining balance less encumbrances for this line item equaled $1,556.43. | |
EVALUATION | |
As part of the swim safety program, the children were tested in four different categories: enter/exit ability, submerging skills, floating and propulsion, and safety recognition. Pre- and posttests on water safety were conducted. | |
