SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Adoption of Proclamation - National Welcoming Week, September 16, 2016, through September 25, 2016 (Office of Teaching and Learning)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
National Welcoming Week is part of a national initiative through Welcoming America.  During this annual series of events, communities bring together immigrants and United States born residents in a spirit of unity to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone – including new Americans.  During the 2015/2016 school year, the Tampa Bay Area Refugee Taskforce sought to make Hillsborough County the first municipality in Florida to officially register as a Welcoming County.  The efforts of the taskforce were met with success and on September 19, 2015, Commissioner Kevin Beckner provided a keynote speech at the University of South Florida to launch our community’s first National Welcoming Week celebration.

The needs of Hillsborough County Public Schools students and families are represented by the English Language Learner Program and the Career Recruitment and Instruction in Basic English (CARIBE) Program staff members serving on the Tampa Bay Area Refugee Task Force.  The Tampa Bay Refugee Task Force brings together community-based and faith-based stakeholders in order to support newly resettled refugees in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.  This will be the first declaration acknowledging National Welcoming Week.  It is our hope that this declaration will encourage schools to participate by conducting culturally responsive lessons and mindful activities that encourage acceptance, highlight diversity, and build a spirit of community throughout the week of September 16, 2016, through September 25, 2016.  Through its actions, the Board acknowledges the sacrifices of refugees in our communities, as well as their contributions, achievements, and legacies.
