Recognition of the Winners of the Florida Department of Transportation Hillsborough County Crosswalk Safety Art Contest (Office of Teaching and Learning) | |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
In Hillsborough County, approximately 20% of pedestrian crashes occur at intersections with traffic signals where pedestrians do not obey the crosswalk messages. The Florida Department of Transportation in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools, the City of Tampa, and the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization developed a safety education campaign to help reduce these crashes near five Hillsborough County high schools: Blake, Brandon, Gaither, Hillsborough, and King. The Crosswalk Safety Art Contest aimed to encourage young artists to create a design with an educational safety message that will wrap around the signal controller cabinets and encourage compliance with pedestrian signals. The winning artist now has their design wrapped around various Hillsborough County signal controller cabinets. We would like to recognize the following winners: First Place - Blake High School Shanice Robertson, Grade 12 Art Teachers: Molly Dressel and Linda Galgani Second Place - Hillsborough High School Julian Catano Perez, Grade 12 Art Teacher: Caitlin Clay Third Place - Blake High School Sarah Jarvis, Grade 12 Art Teachers: Molly Dressel and Linda Galgani |
