Recognition of Renewal Achievement of National Board Certified Teachers (Educational Leadership and Professional Development Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
National Board Certification is the most prestigious credential an educator can earn. It is the goal of the National Board certification process to further accomplished teaching practice, grow the accomplished teaching ranks, and ensure all students have access to the highest quality standards-based instruction. Since 1989, the district has been committed to providing encouragement and support to candidates. This effort has evolved into the ASPIRE! program, a formalized year-long system of support engaging current board-certified educators in facilitating job-embedded professional learning for candidates pursuing certification or renewal of certification.

Like board-certified doctors, educators who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, self-assessment, peer review, and expert evaluation. Initial certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment typically completed in one to three years. Candidates are assessed on content knowledge aligned to content they present to students and the certification they are seeking. As part of the process, candidates build a portfolio that includes student work samples, classroom video, artifacts, and a thorough written analysis of their classroom teaching. NBCTs who seek Certification Renewal also identify how their continued professional learning impacts our profession.

Board Certified Teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced levels of content knowledge, instructional skills, and educational practices. Over 900 Hillsborough educators have earned National Board Certification. For the 2018-2019 school year, Hillsborough County Public Schools has 255 active Board Certified Teachers in classrooms, working at school sites, and in leadership positions. Through the district’s NBCT Support Provider initiative, their knowledge and expertise is shared with other educators, new to the profession teachers, and certification candidates, thus improving overall teaching and learning throughout the district. This year, we celebrate 24 Board Certified Teachers
