Recognition of the Going for the Gold Hillsborough County Public Schools 90x20 Committee for Support of the Graduation Rate Initiative (Academic Support and Federal Programs)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Going for the Gold Hillsborough County Public Schools 90x20 (G4G) mission is to increase graduation rates and reduce dropout rates by supporting all students in reaching their full potential at school, at home, and in the community. Since its inception, stakeholders (parents, students, community members, businesses, schools, and political leaders) have been empowered with research-based strategies that ensure academic student success through the connection of the four G4G pillars (Diversity/Cultural Responsiveness, Build Relationships/District Culture, Health and Wellness, and Graduation 90x20 Focus on Attendance).

The committee includes students, parents, district staff, business partners, community members, faith based organizations and School Board Member, Lynn Gray.  The following strategies were planned by the committee to support the G4G Initiative:
  • G4G Youth Summit and Student Ambassadors: The youth summit was piloted to build relationships and trust with students and parents to support goal setting and resources to improve graduation and attendance at selected schools. The student ambassador component was piloted at selected schools within the community to promote graduation, improve attendance and support all students.
  • G4G Pledge Week: Over 30 schools participated in Pledge Week to strengthen a culture of excellence in HCPS by increasing awareness of the district’s goal (90% graduation rate by year 2020), as well as the importance of all students graduating.  The participants signed their name on a pledge sheet and/or card to demonstrate their level of commitment.  This support helped us exceeded our goal of 7,000 participants with a total number of 21,600 pledges.
  • G4G Health Fairs for Employees and Fitness Clinics: Health Fair sessions connected employees to tools and community resources to support their health goals. Fitness clinics were a tool that supported and motivated students, parents, teachers, and staff to learn safe ways to reach fitness goals and prepare for the 2019 Publix Gasparilla 5K event.
  • G4G Gasparilla team: A team of over 615 parents, students, district staff, and community members participated in the 5K Gasparilla Race on February 23, 2019.  Our team was recognized as the largest team for the third year in a row, and received the “Chevrolet Cruzin’ Krewe Challenge” plaque from the Publix Gasparilla Foundation.
The collective efforts of the G4G committee fostered meaningful interactions, enhanced support, and shaped positive public perception of the graduation goal.
