SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve the Memorandum of Understanding with For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) (Workforce Connections)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
FIRST is the largest organization that engages kids in kindergarten through high school in mentor-based, research and robotics programs that help them become workforce ready, science and technology leaders, as well as well-rounded contributors to society. The goal of this program is to increase the opportunity for all students in the district to experience FIRST Robotics through classroom and/or after-school enrichment programs. This Memorandum of Understanding will signify a formal partnership with the FIRST organization, which allows our district to receive additional professional development, financial and grant support as well as a dedicated program implementation coordinator. In addition, our district will now be connected with a larger industry partner network. |
|
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES | |
• Improve the high school graduation rate • Provide a student-centered learning environment that engages every child
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)
While there is no direct cost to this partnership, there is a cost for student teams to participate in FIRST events, which is typically paid through student generated funds. All curriculum, equipment and supplies are provided for those students who participate as part of the school day. New and expanding teams may access other funding sources such as Business Partnerships, Industry Certifications, and Sponsorships for a competitive experience.
EVALUATION | |
In 2020/2021, we plan to increase the number of students accessing FIRST competitive-based after school events by over 22% from 155 to 190, and project continued growth each year through 2023/2024.
